“Mother, that was Daddy then,

Crossing the lawn. I know.”

“Hush child; your Daddy´s gone away

For keeps. I´ve told you so.”

“Mother, that was Daddy´s step.

I heard it in the hall.”

“You imagined it. The floor boards creak.

Nobody´s there at all.”

“You know how he whistles through his teeth?

I heard it clear just then.”

“Where do you get such notions, child?

He can´t come back again.”

“I know it´s Daddy climbing past

The landing on the stair.

I hope he brought us something.”

“For God´s sake, hush! Who´s there?
